Rob Black, 67, died Sunday, June 28, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.

Robert Sterling Black Jr. was born January 28, 1953 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Robert and Erma Sterner Black. Rob graduated from West Liberty High School in 1971 where he excelled in football and golf. He was united in marriage to Connie Sue Simon on September 14, 1974 in West Liberty. He was employed with the Raymond Corporation in Muscatine as a welder for many years.

He learned carpentry skills working beside his father for many years and used these skills to construct the “House that Rob built” as well as numerous other projects.

He coached West Liberty Junior Varsity Football with Gus Garcia for many years. In addition to coaching, Rob opened up his home weight room to everyone and developed relationships with players that he maintained for many years after.

He enjoyed watching his three daughters play athletics and spent countless nights and weekends watching them play volleyball from high school throughout college.

One of his favorite hobbies was biking, and he and his family rode in every RAGBRAI since 2008. He passed down his love of biking to his family, making numerous memories and traditions of bridge beers and dancing with Mr. Happy.

Rob and his son Abe shared a special bond through their mutual love of music, spending many nights listening to the blues on their vintage stereo and going to concerts.

Rob is survived by his wife and best friend Connie Black; children, Abe Black, Miranda (Ben) Palmer, Maggie (Ethan) Krob and Sam (Jared) Anderson; and grandchildren, Simon, Oliver, August, Frances, Greta, Matilda, Mabel, Ida, Lou, Arlo, and Otis; and special nephew Simon Maurer. Also surviving is his dog Bertha.

Private family graveside services will be held in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. A celebration of Rob’s life will be held at a later date.
