4102 Private A Westgate, 1st Battalion the Royal Sussex Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War sailing from Malta, and arrived at the Cape about 20 Mar 1900. Along with the 1st Derbyshire, 1st Cameron Highlanders, and the City Imperial Volunteers, they formed the 21st Brigade, which was created after the occupation of Bloemfontein. They fought at the battle of Doornkop 29 May 1900 and at Diamond Hill. Early in 1901, the commanding officer, Colonel du Moulin, was put in command of a small column, including his own battalion. During the remainder of the campaign this column operated in the Orange Free State. On 28th January 1902 the column was bivouacked and were attacked at night, Colonel du Moulin along with 10 men were killed and 6 were wounded in repulsing the Boer forces. Pte Westgate died of disease at No 12 General Hospital, Springfontein, Orange Free State. He is also commemorated on the Royal Sussex Regiment Boer War memorial in front of Regency Square, Kings Road, Brighton, East Sussex, England (see:https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/175387/).
