Sylvester Murchison was born to the union of the late Seldom and Docia Murchison on May 22, 1922. He was born in Houston County, Rocky Springs Community, Grapeland, Texas. His education was obtained in the Rocky Springs and Cedar Branch Schools in Grapeland, Texas. As a young child, he united withe the Cedar Branch Baptist Church. He later moved to Dallas, Texas and worked for Sanger Harris Department Store for fifteen years until his health failed.
Sylvester was united in holy matrimony to Miss Odessa Murchison and to this union nine children were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Herman Murchison. He leaves to rejoice in his memory: his wife, Odessa Murchison, eight children, Sylvester Jr, Clyde, Annie, Kenneth, Carlon, Rosezzella, William and John Murchison ; three sisters Margie Houst, Lula M. Burns and Willie Carr ; one brother, Oldom Murchison.
