Charlotte Kelly
RICHMOND - Charlotte Crocker Kelly, 88, of 172 Beacon St., Boston, a former Richmond resident, died at home yesterday morning after a long illness.
Mrs. Kelly was the widow of Shaun Kelly, prominent Richmond resident who for many years operated Glen Grannie Farm on Route 295. He died in 1969.
Born in Fitchburg, the daughter of the late Alvah and Charlotte Bartow Crocker, Mrs. Kelly attended St. Timothy's School in Maryland, where she majored in music. A pianist, she continued to play until shortly before her death.
She and her husband, a 1909 Harvard graduate who became an an international lawyer, were married in 1912, and spent a number of years in Paris, France, where he was in practice. After a brief stay in New York City, the Kellys moved to Richmond in 1921, where they resided for 41 years.
Mr. Kelly developed a superior strain of Holstein cows and large apple orchard. He was a leader in the passage of legislation to assist Massachusetts farmers. Mrs. Kelly was instrumental in the founding of the Community Health Association of Richmond and West Stock-bridge. She was honored for her work with the association in 1962, the year she and her husband moved to Boston.
Mrs. Kelly was also active in the Richmond branch of the American Red Cross, and for many years was a leader on the state and national levels in fund drives and other activites in behalf of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
She is survived by three sons, Shaun Kelly Jr. of Houston, Texas, Bartow Kelly of Fitchburg and Edmond C. Kelly of Dublin, N.H.; a brother, the Rev. John Crocker of Cambridge; 11 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 at Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston, with the Rev. Thorn Blair, rector, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen's Church, Pittsfield; Trinity Church, Boston, or to the National Cathedral, Washington, D.C.
