Johanna Haats Klaassen was born on February 25, 1921, in Raymond, Minnesota, the daughter of Haat and Epkea (Sapp) Haats. She grew up on the family farm east of Raymond, the youngest of three sisters and three brothers. She attended Raymond Country School and Raymond High School. On September 25, 1942, she was united in marriage to John Klaassen at the Bethany Reformed Church Parsonage in Clara City, Minnesota. To this union, four sons and one daughter were born. They continued to farm until 1956, when they moved to Willmar, Minnesota. Johanna was employed at Farmers Produce (now Jennie-O Foods), Ben Franklin, JC Penneys, and Habichts Department Store where she retired in 1990 after 25 years. After nearly 53 years in her home in Willmar, Johanna moved to Copperleaf Senior Living in 2016 where she was a resident until February 2020 when she moved to Carris Health Center where she has resided since.
In her earlier years, she enjoyed baking and cooking, gardening and tending to her marigolds each summer, dancing with John to old time music, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved following their many music and sports related activities. She was an avid Willmar Cardinals and Minnesota Twins fan, and faithfully listened to KWLM daily. She enjoyed reminiscing about the good old days and her career at Habicht's Department Store where she felt her customers were also her friends. Johanna had been a member of United Methodist Church in Willmar since the late 1950s.
Johanna passed away on Wednesday, May 27, at Carris Health Rice Memorial Hospital with her daughter, Cindy, at her side. The family is grateful for the attention and compassion she received at Copperleaf, Carris Health Center, and Rice Memorial Hospital.
