William Andrew Olson was born on 26 Nov 1910 in Spanish Fork UT to Margrét Jónína Markúsdóttir and Ed Olson (born Eggert Gudmunder Ólafsson) both were born in Vestmannaeyjar, Vestmanneyjasysla, (Westman Island) Iceland.

William became an orphan at 15 when his mother died as a reuslt of an accident (auto vs. buggy). Bill's three older sisters were already married and were living in and around the Salt Lake City area. The three remaining children, William (the oldest), Ole and possibly Beth attempted to continue to live in their Spanish Fork home without much success. Ole said that during their first winter alone, it was a toss up on whether they were going to starve or freeze to death. They did not have enough firewood to keep warm or to cook. The boys ran out of underwear and so they wore a woman's one-piece bathing suit. Their Uncle Bill tried to help, but it must not have been enough. The three children eventually went to live with different relatives.

Bill left his relative's house as soon as he was able to get work as a coal miner, he was about 16 or 17 years old. He talked about the riots when the miners tried to unionize.

At 23 years old he married 20-year old Thelma Ward on 27 Mar 1933 in Price, UT and after moving around from one coal mine to another around the basin they eventually settled in Spanish Fork with their six children. William or Bill as he was called, retired from the Geneva Steel Provo Utah plant after more than 40 years as a coal miner.
