Rev. Henry O. Jochens of Merna, Nebr., passed away at a Grand Island hospital, March 7, 1939, at the age of 55 years, 3 months and 14 days.
Rev. Jochens was born Nov. 23, 1883 in Gollonow, Germany, the son of Henry A. and Elsie Mueller Jochens.
When he was six years of age he came to this country with his parents. For a year the family lived in Ohio then came to Nebraska where he grew to manhood in the community around Fairbury.
On August 14, 1912 he was married to Miss Margaret Michels at Fairbury who survives with their five children. For a while, he was in secular business but finally gave his life to the ministry of the gospel, following in the footsteps of his father who had preached both in Germany and in this country. For about ten years he was pastor of Evangelical churches in Colorado and the last ten years has served Methodist churches in Long Pine, Cairo, Gandy and Merna, Nebr. He preached at Merna February 12, altho (sic) not well and was taken to the hospital in Grand Island the next day where he underwent an operation.
Surviving are his wife; two daughter, Irene, student nurse in in the Methodist hospital at Omaha; Mrs. Mildred Duncan, Long Beach, Calif.; three sons, Ervin of Atlanta, Texas and Leslie and Eugene at home. Wednesday of this week, Eugene underwent an emergency operation at Grand Island and is in a critical condition. He is also survived by two brothers; Rev. John Jochens of Harvard; George of Tilden and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Walker of Culbertson; Mrs. Margaret Cook of Ord, Nebr., Mrs. Lucy Smith of Sacramento, Calif., and three grandchildren.
Brief services were held Wednesday, March 8 at the Sowl and Grosshans Mortuary in Grand Island in charge of Rev. Earl Raitt, pastor of the Methodist church of Grand Island assisted by Dr. Paul M. Hillman, district superintendent of the Kearney district of the Methodist church.
Funeral services are being held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30 at the East Gladstone church, Rev. Paul M. Hillman of Grand Island and Rev. Harry F. Huntington of Fairbury officiating. They are being assisted by Rev. Luscher of Endicott, Rev. Adrian Edgar of Wymore and Rev. Kilhorn of Gladstone, Fairbury officiating.
