Willie Paul Mahanay Hess loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed gently away on May 17, 2020, surrounded by children and grandchildren.

Willie was born at home on Jan. 11, 1918, in the middle of a blinding snowstorm and the year of the Spanish Flu pandemic on a farm east of Alvarado, Texas. Now she has left us in the year of the coronavirus pandemic. No more storms, no more pain. She was the second child of Lee and Naomi Prestridge Mahanay.

Willie was strong-willed, sassy and spirited; she had to be to keep her six brothers in line, J C, Emmett Lee, Virgil, Calvin, Billy Joe and Eddie. She graduated from Alvarado High School in 1936 and married John "Punkin" Hess on Sept. 11, 1938. He preceded her in death after 57 years of love, laughter and "42". She was baptized in a creek when she was 10 years old and was a faithful member of the church of Christ all her life.

Willie was a charter member of Richland Hills Church of Christ. She served God and her church by cooking. Her pies, especially the chocolate pies are legend. She made malts for the kids. She took grand and great-grandchildren on trips to the Fort Worth Museum, the park down the street from her house and other fun places.

Those of us who are left behind and will miss her terribly are daughter, Judy and her husband, Charles from Paradise, Texas, Ron and his wife, Kathy from Decatur; son, Steve and his wife, Cindy from Alba; grandchildren, Lisa, Glenn and Bill Jennings, Kendra Broom, Kayla McCanless, Kelsey O'Rear, John and James Hess; and 19 great-grandchildren.
