Jay Cleveland Goodwin was born on March 22, 1880 in Tennessee, and he was the son of Christopher Columbus "Chris" Goodwin (1850–1933) and Margaret Josephine "Josie" (Warren) Goodwin (1856–1939). {His Death Certificate has him born in 1880, while his World War I Draft Registration Card has his year of birth as 1879 and has him listed as having a broken arm.}
A retired farmer living at 4709 Elkins Avenue in Nashville, he was 79 years old and single when he died at home of stomach cancer on January 15, 1960.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Leonard Goodwin (ca 1877- ), Jesse E Goodwin (1889–1920) and Willie W Goodwin (26 Nov 1891-May 1973), by sister Margaret "Maggie" (Goodwin) Phillips (1878–1946) and by four other unnamed siblings who likely died young. Survivors included sisters Dana (Goodwin) Meacham (1886–1964) of Los Angeles, California, Eula Elizabeth (Goodwin) Neeld (1873–1962), Nora (Goodwin) Thompson (5 Mar 1893–Apr 1974), Sadie "Pauline" (Goodwin) Shelton (8 Dec 1899–Oct 1983), Miss Mary "Ibbie" Goodwin (1882–1966), Miss Louise Goodwin (2 Dec 1894–Jul 1987) and Miss Carrie Goodwin (1896–1991) of Nashville.
Funeral Services were held at New Hope Church of Christ in Humphreys County on January 17th, and burial was in Warren Cemetery in Humphreys County.
