Ewell Magee, 86, beloved father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and life-long Mississippian, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 4 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel in Ridgeland. Family and friends are invited to visit at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Saturday. Following the chapel service, Masonic rites will be observed at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Magee was a Master Mason and member of Pearl Lodge No. 23.
Mr. Magee was born in Magee, MS on May 27, 1921. He was the son of the late Richard Norval Magee and the late Carolyne Butler Magee. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Bond Magee.
Before retirement, Mr. Magee had a successful career with Greyhound Bus Lines. He was recognized by Greyhound on numerous occasions for his excellent safety record, as well as his outstanding courtesy, skill, and diplomacy while interacting with his passengers.
Affectionately known as "Mac" by his fellow drivers and passengers, he was a popular driver often requested by tour groups, including Mississippi Youth Tours, for whom he drove for a record ten years. This summer event for Mississippi teenagers introduced them to The Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, Niagara Falls, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, New York City, Washington, D.C., Mexico, Canada and other picturesque places. Mac loved showing others these sites and ensuring their safe passage in these treks, but he always said "there's no better place to live than Mississippi --- it's got the best people in the world."
In his retirement years, Mr. Magee had more time to devote to his family, friends, and many outdoor interests. He was an avid fisherman and children, grandchildren and friends looked forward not only to the fishing trips, but the delicious fried fish and hush puppies served up with lots of love and many "fishy" tales.
He delighted in passing on his love of both fishing and hunting to his grandchildren. All his children value the gift of their Dad's great love and guidance given untiringly to them and to their children and find great comfort in these special memories.
In the neighborhood in which he and Mary lived since 1958, Mr. Magee was well known for sharing not only the bounty of his garden but his time. Whether lending his skills as a handyman or small-engine mechanic, aiding in times of sickness and distress, or bringing a basket of fresh tomatoes, he brought an infectious smile and wit and often a bit of wisdom. He was a man whom his neighbors, friends, and family knew they could count upon to lend a hand.
Survivors include: children, Rev. Beth Williams and her husband, Paul of Tulsa, Okla.; Jean Cox and her husband, Charles of Starr; Durwood (Woody) Magee of Jackson; Maggie Clark and her husband, Gene of Brandon; and Evelyn Magee of Jackson. Grandchildren are Dr. Andy Crocker and his wife, Susie of Denver, Colo.; Betsy Kaiser and her husband, Rev. Chris Kaiser of Tulsa, Okla.; Steve Crocker of Oceanside, Calif.; John Neal, Jr. and his wife, Donna of Pearl; Patty Hagood and her husband, Ken of Cincinnati, Ohio; James Neal and his wife, Lisa, of Brandon; Ken Youens-Clark and his wife, Lori Kindler of McKinney, Texas; Casey Van Sice of Jackson; Corrie Van Sice of Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. Magee is also survived by thirteen great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and one sister, Sudie Simmons of Denham Springs, La.
Also preceding Mr. Magee in death were two grandchildren, Mickey Magee and infant Mary Magee.
The family is grateful for the compassionate assistance with Mr. Magee's care provided by Hospice Ministries, Right at Home In Home Care & Assistance, and the Mississippi Alzheimer's Association. We thank them for their flexibility, professionalism, kindness, and respectful consideration.
