Daniel Thomas Wood, 88, one of Star Valley's oldest pioneers, died Saturday, Feb 7, at his home in Auburn, of aliments incident to old age, after a long illness.
Funeral services were conducted at the Auburn Ward Chapel Tuesday afternoon, with Bp. Jesse A. Hurd in charge. Burial was in the Auburn Cemetery.
He was born Oct. 8 1870, at Woods Cross, Davis County, Utah, a son of Daniel C. Wood and Elizabeth Waddoups Wood.
When he was 14 years of age his father moved his family to Rockland, Idaho. He came to Star Valley with his father in 1889, when there were only a few families in the valley. After feeding cattle on Lanes Creek during the winter of 1889-90 he returned to Star Valley with his father's family in 1890. He homesteaded the farm on which he spent the rest of his life. He built a home on the homestead in which all 13 of their children were born. He and his wife spent 64 years together in this home.
He married Susie May Walton, on Oct. 24, 1894, in the Logan Temple. The marriage was solemnized by Apostle Marriner W. Merrill.
He fulfilled a special MIA mission to Emory Stake at Huntington, Utah, in 1903 and a mission to the Southern States from March 1911 to March 1913, leaving his wife and eight children at home. He was bishop of the Auburn Ward for 15 years, from June 1913 to June 1928, after which he served on the Star Valley Stake High Council. He taught school at Auburn from 1901 to 1903.
He was widely known as a man of great honesty and integrity in his business dealings and is reported to have said when he was bishop that, "a day never passes that does not see me help a neighbor of friend."
In his younger days he was an excellent baseball player and followed the game closely until failing health forced him to cease this activity. He gained a wide recognition of his ability as a leader of men and until his illness was a powerful influence on the young people of his ward.
He is survived by his widow, May Walton Wood, and nine children – Mrs. Leslie (Ada) Hillyard, Garden Grove Calif.; Mrs. Russell (Ila) Wilkes, Bedford, Wyo.; Percy L. Wood, Baker, Ore.; Mrs. W.D. (Lula)Griffiths, Burbank, Calif.; Jesse E. Wood, Murray, Utah; Mrs. A .F. Johnson, Inglewood, Calif.; Don Wood, Afton, Wyo.; Denzel Wood, Auburn, Wyo.; and Thomas G. Wood, Montpelier, Idaho. All survivors were present at the funeral. Four children preceded him in death; Russell Wood, Bertha Wood Leavitt, Earl Wood, and Verl Wood. He is also survived by 47 grandchildren, and 80 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
