Arcadia Rosario Camacho
April 22, 1922 - April 29, 2020

Arcadia Rosario Camacho is affectionately known as 'Mami" or "Wela" was a humble servant. She was selfless in all her ways.

A true Latina in her heart and soul. She was born and raised in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Her mother Sarafina Garcia passed away giving birth to her, and her father Dolores Rosario passed away when she was a tender toddler. Thankfully, she was taken care of by a beloved Aunt. Although she was once an orphan, she would one day be the sacrificial caregiver who touched four generations.

Only our fierce great-grandmother would withstand COVID-19, testing negative twice! Up until 6 months ago, she was still in optimal health.

She outlived her husband Pedro Pagan Camacho (89), of 56 years and her 3 birth children, Juan Antonio Rosario (72), Olga Camacho (24), Francisco Luis Camacho (50), and she is survived by her two daughters whom she raised and legally adopted, her biological great-granddaughters Juanita Santiago Reyes 36, and Nisaini Rivera Rexach 34. She also raised many grandchildren, such as Annette Marie Camacho (Toro), 61 Daisy Alverio, 59, and Denise Camacho, 52. She graciously took care of many great-grandchildren as well including Sabrina Rodriguez, 37, Noel Pierre Carraballo, 34, Isaiah M. Camacho, 23.

Her love was without limits and her presence was the anchor in her family. She faithfully stood by her husband's side as he served in the U.S. Army fighting in World War II including the battle of Pearl Harbor. She supported him throughout his welding career. They both came to Chicago, IL in 1954. They resided in the Humboldt Park community for decades and then in the Logan Square and Hermosa Park communities for the duration of their lives.

She endured tragedies. She lost her daughter Olga Camacho in a Chicago house fire, along with 4 grandchildren: David Camacho (9), Mercedes Camacho (5), Isabel Camacho (4), Armando Camacho (3), How did she do it? It was her faith in God that carried her through.

It was also her unrelenting commitment to her family that sets her apart. Washing clothes by hand for decades, cooking hundreds of large calderos of Arroz con Gandules, walking to the grocery store because she never drove and still found ways to exude love, warmth, and grace to many.

Her kitchen was immaculate and smelled like Pinesol. Her mornings began with a piping hot café con leche with extra azucar! By evenings, the aroma of "sofrito," her favorite cooking paste, hearty rice and beans with her choice of meat filled the entire building.

Her family often saw her washing dishes and caring for her home. She did all the mundane household tasks but little did we know, those hands were building a strong legacy that has stretched into the 4th generation.

She only went to 3rd grade but was the wisest person any of us knew. She never wore makeup but was naturally beautiful and she never wore pants in her entire life. By the time her grandchildren were born, she was comfortable in her "batas" watching Telemundo news updates and her novellas as a source of entertainment.

She was a peacemaker. She didn't fight or demand her way. She was quiet but her words were powerful. She was not one to be messed with. She would grab that "chancla" and wack you a few times if need be, "pa que aprendas!" (so you would learn). She would always give cuddles and kisses afterward. She raised so many kids, growing weary, but still gentle and sweet.

She tirelessly served her family. Now she is finally resting in peace with God and her rewards await her in heaven.

This is her legacy. She was a blessing and always passed them down to us. She's beat all of the possible odds. She's one in a million.

Her final 98th birthday was extra special. Her family was not able to visit her because of the "corona virus" social-distancing restrictions.

Instead, her family brought the party outside to her at Elmhurst Hospital, holding signs and banners to wish her a happy birthday from a safe distance.

Inside the hospital, Wela's care team adorned her with a birthday crown, sash with flowers, and brought her down to a ground-level window so she could see the outpouring of smiles, waves, kisses blown and birthday greetings from her loved ones on the other side of the window.

The celebration continued with a birthday parade of a dozen cheerfully-decorated vehicles filled with adoring family members waving to "Wela" or "Mami" as she and her care team watched from an upper-level window.

They sang "Happy birthday" to a very special mom/grandma/great-grandma!

Her wake and memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 10, 2020, which is Mother's Day. A symbolic day to celebrate a powerful Matriarch who is considered a mother to many.
