Dr. Emily B. Ryder was the daughter of Otis & Clarissa Brainerd. She was the widow of Music Prof. George Wellington Ryder who predeceased her in 1871 in San Francisco, California. She was author of the book, "Little Wives of India." She gave lectures not only in the United States, but around the globe to promote women's health. She lived in Bombay, India for many years.
