The following is from Jon Ridgeway:

John Carey was born October 20, 1802 in Philadelphia, PA. He was in Deer Creek Township, Carroll County, Indiana in August 1828, and in 1829 was given a commission for seven years as judge of probate court in Carroll county. He went to Oregon in 1847 as part of the Elias Buell wagon train. He represented District 22, Yamhill County, in the 1852 Oregon House as a member of the Federal Party, and served as Dayton postmaster. He took a Donation Land Claim near Dayton, Yamhill Co. OR. In the 1870 census of Dayton, he is listed as a notary public. He married Ruth Odell August 26, 1824 in Wayne County, Indiana. An Odell family researcher believes they moved to Illinois about 1840, and from there to Oregon. Carey bend was named for John and Ruth. John had poems published. Their children were Sarah Ann (Carey) McKune, Amanda Ellen (Carey) Buell, John Wesley Carey, Alfred M. Carey, Charles A. Carey, Caroline F. (Carey) Watkins.
