Alanson, Emmet County, Michigan––was first established as Hinman, Michigan, January 17, 1877.

On January 17, 1877, Hollis Frayers, was appointed the first U.S. Postmaster. On, September 10, 1879, Henrietta M. Baxter was appointed the second U.S. Postmaster.

Artemus Baird was the third U. S. Postmaster. He was appointed October 20, 1879.

Sophronia A. Frayer became Alanson's fourth U. S. Postmaster on March 23, 1882. A few months later, June 22, 1882, the towns name officially changed from Hinman, to Alanson, Michigan.
