Celebration of life services for Alda Swartzendruber, 97, of Newton, KS, formerly of Kalona, IA will be Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the West Union Mennonite Church, rural Parnell, IA. Committal service will be prior to service at 10:00 AM in the West Union Cemetery, rural Parnell.
Visitation will be Monday, July 1 at the Peterseim Funeral Home from 4-7 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the West Union Mennonite Church or the Kalona Mennonite Church.
Alda Swartzendruber died Thursday, June 27 at the Schowalter Villa in Hesston, KS.
Alda Swartzendruber was born February 8, 1916 in Beaver Crossing, NE. She was the daughter of Arthur and Amanda Stutzman Burkey. Alda and Lloyd Swartzendruber were united in marriage in the family home in Seward County, Nebraska on August 12, 1938.
The couple farmed in the Wellman community until retiring in Kalona.
Alda had many interests and belonged to the West Union Mennonite Church, Prairie China Painters, Garden Club of Wellman, and Women's Mennonite Society. She taught Sunday school and bible school many years. She enjoyed doll collecting and designing and making clothing for the dolls.
Surviving Alda are two children and spouses; Rosie and husband Bob Roberson of Newton, KS and Arthur and wife Ethel Swartzendruber of Kokomo, IN. Also surviving are five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, one brother Marlin and wife Marge Burkey of Seward, NE, two sisters, Lorreta and husband Roy Wolfer of Milford, NE and Leann Miller of York, NE.
Alda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd (2007) two brothers, Lawrence and Perry and one sister, Verda White. Peterseim Funeral Home, Kalona IA.
