He was married on September 23, 1966, to Jutta Jörn. They were divorced on March 18, 1982. He was remarried on June 23, 1982, in Bad Soden am Taunus, to another commoner Brigitte von Dallwitz, a granddaughter of German aeronautical engineer Richard Wegner von Dallwitz.
