A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Andersonburg, Perry County, May 27, 1864, mustered into federal service that day at Harrisburg as a private with Co. I, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865.

Jacob Long, a highly respected resident of Carroll Township, was found in a dying condition, near Shermans Dale, on Monday evening. and died a few minutes after being discovered. He had meen as well as usual and drove into Shermans Dale, Monday afternoon on business. When he left Shermans Dale he was all right and made no complaints to any one. He had gone only a short distance when he fell our of the buggy, having evidently been stricken with heart disease and was found by Mr. Kerns just as he was breathing his last.
Since putting the above in type we have received the following further particulars of Mr. Long's death; He had been a sufferer for some time of heart disease. While on his way home from Shermans Dale he evidently became ill for as he was passing the residence of William Kerns, a short distance from his home, Mrs. Kerns heard him moan and told her husband to go see what was the matter. Before Mr. Kerns reached him Mr. Long fell out of the buggy under the horse's feet and the horse tramped him on the head, making a deep gash. The man was dead when Mr. Kerns got him out from under the buggy. His family was quickly notified and Dr. J.A. Sheibley of Shermans Dale, was summoned. The doctor says his death was due to heart disease and that he was evidently dead before the would on his head was inflicted by the horse's feet.
Jacob Long was born August 22, 1841 and died October 18, 1909, aged 68 years, 1 month, and 26 days. He is survived by his wife and the following children; Elmer of Harrisburg; John Thomas, and Phillip of Kansas; George,at home; Emma (Mrs. Martin Herman) of Illinois: Mary (Mrs. Harry Wright) of Newport; Harry of Philadelphia; and Christian of Shermans Dale.
Mr. Long was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted May 21, 1864, in Company I, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry, and was honorably discharged July 18, 1865. He was a good and useful citizen and will be sadly missed by his family, as well as by all who knew him.
The funeral was handled on Friday morning with interment in Young's Church Cemetery
