On 23 September 1861, William Henry Brewer enlists in the Union Army as a private. He was residing at Eaton Rapids, Michigan prior to enlistment at 30 years of age. He musters in on 17 January 1862, Company F, Michigan 13th Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On 1 May 1862 he succumbs to disease (pneumonia) on the hospital steamer Empress and is assumed buried somewhere in the war zone.
William Henry Brewer left his widow, Angeline, aged 38, and two children, Alfred, aged 12 and Sarah, five.
