Gary G. Ast, 66, of Conway Springs, died Wednesday, April 8, 2020 Ascension Via Christi-St. Francis, Wichita, KS.

Gary was born October 20, 1953 in Wichita, KS The tenth of fourteen children born to Clemens John Ast and Agnes Josephine (Hermes) Ast. He grew up on the family farm west of Conway Springs and attended St. Joseph Catholic School. Gary graduated from Conway Springs High School with the class of 1971.

He was united in marriage to Paula Anne Rogers on May 12, 1984 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Nevada, MO. They made their home at Conway Springs where they farmed and raised their family of nine children.

Gary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Conway Springs, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother Larry Ast and one sister Etheldreda Hartman.

Gary is survived by his wife Paula Ast; his children: Joan Lowdon (Christopher) of Bonner Springs, KS; Matthew Ast (Amanda) of Ashland, KS; Thomas Ast (Samantha) of Wellington, KS; Jessica Ast of San Diego, CA; Christina Smith (Marcus) of Gardner, KS; Patrick Ast of Anson, KS; Anne Ast of Garnett, KS; Marian Ast of Gardner, KS; Philip Ast of Conway Springs, KS; 8 brothers: LeRoy Ast, Thomas Ast, Virgil Ast, Daryl Ast all of Nevada, MO; Clemens Ast of Wichita, KS; Theodore Ast of Garden Plain, KS; Cecil Ast and Cletus Ast both of Conway Springs, KS; 3 sisters: Shirlene Hommertzheim and Lorraine Jeter both of Wichita, KS; Sharon Holsinger of Shawnee, KS; 6 grandchildren and a number of other relatives and many friends.

Gary was faced with many adversities throughout his lifetime, starting with his health as a newborn. He was never supposed to make it past 2 days, and then 2 weeks, and then 2 years. He continued to beat the odds through his accident at age 19 in which he lost his twin brother, Larry. His fight continued on through third degree burns after a fire when he was 57. He finally passed peacefully at the age of 66 due to COVID-19 after receiving Last Rites and Apostolic Pardon. He received the Last Rites several times during his lifetime, truly showing his tenacious will to live.

Above and beyond his tenacity, Gary was also known for being incredibly generous and open. He had an intense love and a great pride in his wife and nine children. He was proud of his roots and the loving family in which he grew up. It was imperative to Gary to pass on his Catholic faith, a diligent work ethic, and a value system based on honesty and integrity. He never knew a stranger and always had the uncanny ability to make everyone he came in contact with feel valued. With an ornery smile perpetually on his lips, he always had a kind or unexpected remark, an attentive listening ear, or words of comfort and support where needed. He would happily give whatever he could to anyone in need. His great loves, besides faith and family were country living and old cars.

Gary will continue to be loved and a tremendous source of joy. He will be missed greatly.

Services are pending and will be conducted at a later date.

Memorials have been established to St. Joseph Catholic School or the Donor's Choice.
