DEATH AT DEVERAUX
HALL CROSSING
The accident at Deveraux Hall crossing in Bountiful, Saturday evening, April 5, when Lorin D. Briggs and wife were killed and their 3 year old son injured through their conveyance being struck by a train, is one of the worst that has happened in our county we believe since four members of Kershaw family of Layton were killed in a similar manner.
From a careful investigation of the circumstances connected with the unfortunate affair it appears that Mr. Briggs and his people were in their Ford car on their way to Woods Cross. They drove west on the ball park. The south bound train had just passed so they could have crossed over the track without halting but as the rear wheels drug in the dust about four feet before the machine stopped in the center of the track where the wheels started to dragging side ways, it appears like the driver had his mind on the southbound train and did notice the northbound train until it was right upon him when he applied the break thinking he could stop before his auto got onto the track.
People at the station heard the whistle and before they could look up, heard the crash. A party west of Deveraux Hall who could not see either of the trains, that it was the southbound train that whistled a sort of a friendly greeting.
The automobile was pushed along in front of the car 425 feet before the train could be stopped.
The occupants were thrown a little over 50 feet into the street north east of where the collision took place, Mr. and Mrs. Briggs being a few feet apart and the little boy several feet farther on.
Mr. Briggs was instantly killed and Mrs. Briggs did not live many minutes. The boy was not hurt much, however, at first it was feared that he was.
Mr. Briggs was coach at the East Side High school and had won great distinction in athletics. He had held the same position in the Davis High school for three years before accepting the position in Salt Lake. He was 29 years old and was the son of James and Artulus Cook Briggs. He carried $5,000 life insurance.
Mrs. Briggs was the daughter of Bishop and Myra Pace Winegar (who passed away about ten years ago) and was 27 years old. They are survived by two children.
Funeral services were held in the East Bountiful Tabernacle, Wednesday at 2 p. m. and was one of the largest funerals ever held in Bountiful.
