John Alden Dunn
August 29, 1919 ~ April 5, 2020 (age 100)
John Alden Dunn celebrated his 100th birthday in August of 2019 with all of his family in attendance in St. George, Utah. He passed away on April 5, 2020, in St. George, Utah. John was born August 29, 1919, in Montpelier, Idaho, at the home of his oldest sister. He weighed in at 14 pounds on the old home scale. With his family, as the youngest of seven children, John and family resided in Montpelier until 1926 when they moved to Logan, Utah where he attended all of his years of school, graduating from Logan High School in 1937.
John married Bertha Mitchell in the Latter-day Saint Logan, Utah, temple September 14, 1939. Their first daughter, Connie, was born April 1941. Shortly after, they moved to Salt Lake. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1944-1946. After returning to Salt Lake they became parents of another daughter, Cora Jean, who was born July 1948.
John worked 40 years for Greyhound Bus Lines as ticket/travel agent and bookkeeper. He and Bertha served a full-time mission to South Dakota in the early 1980’s for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully in all church organizations and as an ordinance worker in the Latter-day Saint Salt Lake Temple for 15 years. John and Bertha were married 75 years, and he was a great instrument of support with his wife for his family and others. Their life-long clever, creative, frugal ideas during their organized life together were continually inspirational for their daughters and families. He did a masterful job attending to Bertha in her declining years prior to her death in January 2015. John has been kindly attended to the last three years in the Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivins, Utah, where his two daughters and their spouses live and have hovered around him, as well. John’s family sincerely thanks the staff at SUVH in Ivins for their kind attendance to him recently.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha, parents; Noah Brady Dunn and Abigail Eliza Tippets Dunn, three older brothers; Lewis, Reed, Ezra, and three older sisters; Edra, Wyoma, Birdean and a great-grandson, Mitchell David Parker. He is survived by his two daughters, Connie (David Wesley Peterson) and Cora (Joseph LeGrand Bowen), nine grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
A private family gathering and service will by held at 1:00pm on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at the Holbrook Mortuary.
