He served in the United States Army prior to the Korean War, enlisting as a 17 yr old after high school graduation. John worked at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co for 41 years as a maintenance mechanic and assisting in the office. His coworkers nicknamed him “Big John.”
John was united in marriage to Edna Ruth White on May 1,1949 in Council Grove, Kansas. They enjoyed nearly 71 years of marriage.
He was a member of Haven Baptist Church where he served as deacon, usher, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America. John was a distance walker for most of his life and was an avid reader. He was an enthusiastic KU fan, who loved watching the Jayhawks play. He was a “gentle giant” whose faith and kindness let him be a caring husband, dad, and grandpa. John was greatly respected by all of his relatives, especially his grandkids.
John is survived by his wife, Edna, of the home. Other survivors include his three daughters, Kathy (Vic) Edwards of Hutchinson, Susan (Les) Banman of Haven, and Merri (Phillip) Reece of Haven, 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, several step grandchildren, sisters, Gladys (Floyd) Dodds of South Hutchinson and Jo Shuyler of Valley Center.
John was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Irene James.
