Delmar “D.J.” Barr, 93 of Bayles Lake, Loda died at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2020, at North Logan Health Care, Danville.
A Memorial Service followed by burial in Glen Cemetery, Paxton will be held at a later date. Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton is handling arrangements.
D.J. was born June 15, 1926 in Rankin the son of Lawrence and Rebekah Newkirk Barr. He married Joanne “Jo” Hapenny August 29, 1947 in Danville. She preceded him in death May 7, 2009.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathy (George) Carpenter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jeff (Kim) Carpenter, Dan (Brittney) Carpenter, Dylan (Tareena) Barr; four great grandchildren, Connor, Caitlyn, Gavin and Maddox and a daughter-in-law, Anne Barr of Gilbert, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Denny; two brothers and one sister.
D.J. graduated from Rankin High School. He served in the United States Navy 1944-46 on the USS Nevada, USS David W. Taylor and the USS Norman Scott. He worked for REA as a lineman and went on to become a draftsman before his retirement. During his retirement years, he and his wife moved to Sun Lakes, Arizona to be closer to family and owned and operated Sun Lakes Pest Control for 20 years before returning to Bayles Lake, Loda in 2007.
He was a member of the Paxton First United Methodist Church, Paxton American Legion Prairie Post 150 and Paxton Masonic Lodge #416. D. J. always had a side business of Barr’s Tree Service.
In September 2019, D.J. participated in the Peoria Honor Flight and had a wonderful time. He enjoyed boating, fishing and dabbling in real estate. He loved traveling and entertaining and was always ready to spend time with family and friends.
