*****
In January of 1854, Martin Van Cloud filed a preemption of claim for property located at Coloma, the prescribed mechanism for reserving his ownership interest in the property. (PE Bk C, p. 318) In his claim he wrote of the land in question, stating : "containing all of the above land except the hill containing the Grave Yard which is left out for the use of the village of Coloma for Burying ground purposes." That hill, as excepted by Martin Van Cloud, was the location of Coloma Pioneer Cemetery we know today.

The present research effort included identifying the burial places of Martin's brothers, Orville and William H. C. Cloud as they had been in Coloma with the Wimmer's in the 1850 census. All the Cloud brothers known to have been in Coloma have been accounted for with the exception of Martin, aka "Mr. Cloud."

This memorial is intended to identify that it is certainly most likely that Martin Van Cloud is buried in the cemetery, the land of which he left out of lands he had claimed in a preemption of claim filed in 1854.

He was the brother of Elizabeth Jane "Jennie" Cloud Baize Wimmer, wife of Peter L. Wimmer who was with James Marshall at Sutter's mill race when Marshall picked up the first nugget of gold in January of 1849.

Son of Martin Cloud and Mary Polly Dickerson.
