Aug. 3. Walter Blackwell, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Blackwell of the Mount Gallagher section of Laurens county, was drowned in the Saluda river three miles below Ware Shoals late Saturday. His older brother, John Blackwell, failed in an attempt to rescue him. The two were in swimming and the younger boy went down in water 12 feet deep. His body was recovered this morning by Clarence Pace and was brought to the surface by Ben Davis. No inquest will be held, it was stated.

Surviving are his parents, three brothers. John, Warren and Clea Blackwell; two half-brothers, David and Frank Blackwell; four half-sisters. Mrs. Charlie Davis, Mrs. Lila Malone, Mrs. Mackie Malone, Mrs. Maggie Friday; one sister, Mrs. Lila Mae Davis.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a. m. (Eastern daylight saving time) at Poplar Springs church by Rev. Kelly Cooper. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be: Bazzel Davis, J. C, W. H. and Robert Malone, James and J. B. Blackwell. Honorary escort: Rylon Culbertson, Broadus Mitchell, Sam Cooper, Walter Martin, John Mitchell and Ralph Knight.

Flowerbearers: Vera, Edna and Mary Blackwell, Edna and Maggie Malone, Mary Harris and Katherlne Mitchell.
