Please note the discrepancy of one year between his headstone (1904) and the actual date of death (1903). His obituary was published in January 30, 1903 and the only burial card for him shows that he purchased the plot in 1897 (which is when his wife died), then the year 1903 and his name listed as J.G. Casey in the cemetery records. Therefore, it's possible that his headstone was purchased at a later date and the wrong year of death was mistakenly engraved as 1904. He was actually 83 years old when he died, so therefore, in his 84th year.

He was named Jotham Godfrey after the founder of the town he was born in, Sheldon Twp. He was my 2nd great-grandfather and I have the Casey Family Bible that he bought in 1835 (a photocopy of his bible is on the next page)

Covina Argus, (Friday)January 30, 1903 - pg. 4
JOTHAM G. CASEY
The death occurred Tuesday, at the home of his son, of Grandpa Jotham G. Casey in his 84th year. This aged gentleman had been bed-ridden for several months, and his death due to senile decay was not unexpected.
The funeral services took place from the residence on Thursday morning, Rev. J.W. Utter, pastor of the Christian church, officiating at the home. The services at the grave were in charge of the members of Covina Lodge, F. & A. M., of which fraternity the deceased had been a member for many years. The beautiful service of the order was read by Worshipful Master T.F. Griswold assisted by the reverend Chaplain, J.F. Brow.
Jotham G. Casey was born January 13th, 1820, in New York. He was married to Evaline Bunn June 5th, 1842 and moved to Michigan in 1843, and from there they moved to Colorado in 1865 where they lived until they came to California in 1884 where he lived until his death. They had three children two of whom are still living, Mrs. H. H. Failing of Sedalia, Colorado, and Chas. M. Casey of this place.
