MELVIN E. CHAPMAN, age 86, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018, at Clark Memorial Hospital.

Prior to retiring, he was the owner operator of Chapman Sawdust and Shavings and had been a buyer of lumber for Louisville Lumber and Millwork.

He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew B. Chapman and Iva L. Chapman and 11 siblings.

Melvin was a devoted family man survived by his wife Evelyn J. (Farries) Chapman of Jeffersonville, IN.; son, Gary M. Chapman and his wife Debra of Jeffersonville, IN.; daughter, Terri Chapman Buhner and her husband Byron of Jeffersonville, IN.; grandchildren Paul A. Chapman (Stephanie), Kristie A. Ferree (Kevin), and Garrett M. Nale (Nicole) and Rebecca Buhner; 5 great grandchildren (Lilly, Amani, Emma Grace, Landon, Jack, and Harper) and one on the way.

Knowledgeable well beyond formal education, Melvin was the “go to” guy. He could literally fix anything! His knowledge of how things worked was astounding and passed on to his children and grandchildren. When asking family and friends about him, one would often hear that he was kind, compassionate, loved his family above all else but also cared deeply for others. He served as a mentor to many people, but especially to Gary and Larry Groves. He was very proud of his relationships with strangers who often became cherished friends.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. E. M. Coots' Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Expression of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
