Mitchell M. Asmar Sr. Mitchell M. Asmar Sr., 86, of Laurel, died Friday, June 8, 2001, while visiting his wife's family in England. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Laurel, with burial in Crestview Cemetery. The Rev. Stan Runnels and Father Ron Herzog will officiate. Following the services, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Parish Hall. He was born in Laurel Dec. 25, 1914, to Fares and Malaky Asmar, who immigrated to America from Lebanon in 1912. He attended Laurel schools and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1932. He attended LaSalle Extension University in Chicago, Ill. From 1931-32, he was employed by Quimby Brokerage Co., and from 1932-36, worked as terminal manager for Stephens Reliable Express in New Orleans, La. From 1936-38, he worked at Laurel Wholesale Grocery Co., and from 1938-43, worked again for Stephens Reliable Express. He joined the United States Army in February 1943, during World War II and attended basic training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Md. In 1945, he completed and passed the officers' candidate course and was promoted to second lieutenant. He was then sent to Cairo, Egypt, where he served two years. In February 1947, he was honorably discharged as a captain and returned to the United States. While in Cairo, he met Marie Karaiskos, from England. They married June 14, 1947, and had six children. After his return to the United States, he served in the National Guard and Army Reserve for 18 years, retiring in 1965, as a major. He owned and operated several businesses, including Green Truck Lines, Green Transfer and Storage, Midway Distribution Co. and All-American Transfer and Storage. In 1980, he semi-retired, keeping active by managing his real estate holdings. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 414 and obtained his 32nd degree Scottish Rte and York Rite Knight Templar. He was a Shriner at Hamasa Temple in Meridian, the VFW and the American Legion. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was an active member of the Laurel Planning Commission and served on several civic committees. He enjoyed spectator sports, fishing and watching local and national news. His most enjoyable times were spent with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Marie Asmar of Laurel; five daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Ernesto Ruiz of Guatemala, Annette and John Smith of Cary, N.C., Jeanette and Tom Burger of Houston, Texas, Frances and Dale Schwartz of Houston, Texas, and Laila and Mark Folks of Houston, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bo and Kathy Asmar of Laurel and Romeal F. "Bud" and Elaine Asmar of Bellevue, Wash.; a brother, Elias Asmar of Pensacola, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Burn Center, Delta Medical Center, in Greenville. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel, which is in charge of arrangements.
