Laura was born the 6th of 6 children William and Elisabeth (Otto) Bartels, on their farm in Saline County, Nebraska. She was the only one of their three daughters to live past childhood, so she grew up with three brothers: Herman William, Otto John, and Adolph. Laura was baptized as an infant (1904) at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Saline County, Nebraska, south of Tobias; she was confirmed in the same church in 1917. On April 30, 1925 she married Walter Bringewatt whom she had known all her life; they were even in the same confirmation class. She and Walter had two children: Merle (1926-1974) and Opal (1929-2006). Opal never married, but Merle married Rhoda Mayfield. Merle and Rhoda had one daughter, Linda, whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident on her 40th birthday.

Laura and Walter, after their marriage, farmed for a little while in Jefferson county and then moved to a farm in Thayer county, Nebraska. They retired to Fairbury, Nebraska and it was there that they spent the remainder of their earthly days.
