Born June 12, 1916 in Metropolis, IL, he was the son of Daniel M. and Minnie (Hammond) Phelps.
He retired from Owens Illinois Glass in Godfrey on September 29, 1978 as a machinist. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and an avid hunter and fisherman. On August 2, 1941, he married the former Garnet Lillie. She preceded him in death on January 22, 1999.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Anders and her husband Ed of Godfrey, Nora Bertoglio and her husband John of Brighton, Diane Buchanan and her husband John of Godfrey and Debbie Robinson and her companion Don Lightle of Johnstown, OH, two sons, Jack Carver and his wife Peggy of Alton and Bob Carver and his wife Pam of Englewood, CO, 21 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Frank Carver and two brothers, Daniel M. Feathers Phelps Jr. and George Phelps.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday. Reverend Daryl Dolbee will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials may be made to the Passages Hospice or Rosewood Care Center.
