Franklin Eugene Carver, 67, died Sunday, May 1, 2005.

Born Oct. 5, 1937, in Metropolis, Ill., he was the eldest son of Walter Franklin Carver of Godfrey and the late Ina (Walbright) Carver.

A 1956 graduate of Alton High School, he retired from Owens-Illinois Machine Manufacturing in Godfrey, where he was a journeyman machinist for 30 years. He was an avid race fan who loved being around the sport whenever possible. Another lifelong hobby was the CB radio, where he used the handle “Superman.” He was a past member of Franklin Masonic Temple.

In addition to his father, surviving are a daughter and her husband, Cindy and Gary Harshbarger of Cottage Hills and their four children, Gary Lee, Christopher, Scott and Sarah; another daughter, Robin Simpson of Delhi and her four children, Nicholas, Joseph, Samuel and Emilie; a son and his wife, Jeffrey and Angela Carver of Godfrey and their two children, Jeffrey Jr. and Annmarie; a very dear friend, Loretta Mason of Alton; seven siblings and their spouses, Mary and Ed Anders of Godfrey, Jack and Peggy Carver of Alton, Bob and Pam Carver of Englewood, Colo., Nora and John Bertoglio of Brighton, Diane and John Buchanan of Godfrey, Debbie Robinson of Johnstown, Ohio, and Nina Wingard of St. Petersburg, Fla.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Garnett (Lillie) Carver, who raised him; his mother; a sister, Georgia; and his beloved grandmother, Minnie Phelps.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Gent Funeral Home in Alton, where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
