Mrs. Mixon was educated in the McComb City School System and graduated from Mississippi University for Women. She lived in the New York area for a period of 41 years, and served as a teacher in the Fanwood-Scotch Plains, New Jersey School System for 18 years. She achieved the rank of Master Teacher, and was awarded an honorary lifetime membership in the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Educators Association. She was a member of the New Jersey Retired Educators Association, the Order of First Families of Mississippi, Daughters of The American Revolution and Centenary Methodist Church of McComb. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Jackson, MS in 1971 where they resided until returning to McComb in 1981.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Elwood Mixon; her son, William Alan Mixon; and her parents, Jacob Elias Alford and Ella Rebecca Quin Alford.

She was survived by her daughter, Marian Alford Mixon Houk of Falls Church, VA; her daughter-in-law, Colleen Mixon Morgan of Boston, MA; four half-brothers, Jacob Egloff Alford of Metairie, LA, James Louis Alford and Julius Mosby "Pooley" Alford, both of McComb, MS, and John Warren Alford of Pass Christian, MS; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
