Martha Jean Evans, 85, of Macon, GA, formerly Sistersville, WV, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2020, surrounded by her family.

She was born on February 4, 1935 in Sistersville, WV, a daughter of the late Alonzo “Zeke” H. Evans and Clara Stewart Evans.

She was the last surviving sibling of eight, which included Howard Evans, Mildred Evans Quinif, Wallace Evans, Donald "Zeke" Evans, Kathryn Evans Hickman and Dolores Evans McCoy.

Martha was born with the spiritual gifts of both advocate and caregiver and was known for these gifts throughout her life’s work.

Martha graduated from Sistersville High School in 1952 and went on to play women’s professional basketball for Hazel Walker’s Arkansas Travelers from 1952 through 1954. She was known for her sharp shooting and impressive backhand pass and she enjoyed traveling the country showcasing her team’s talents. She graduated from Morehead State University and the returned home to Sistersville and opened The School of Hope for exceptional children with need in her community and later went on to write developmental programs for profoundly delayed children while working at Colin Anderson Center for the State of West Virginia. Her strong will and perserverance allowed her to grant these children the care, safety, love, and freedoms that they deserved no matter their disability. She moved to Georgia in 1995 to be closer to her son, Jeffrey Aaron Evans and in 1999 served a new role as grandmother to Amanda Michelle Evans. While in Georgia, Martha enjoyed operating the Snack Shop at Bowden Golf Course where she found pleasure in feeding anyone who was hungry. In the last two decades, Martha continued to live out her spiritual gifts while caring for her remaining siblings.

Martha is survived by her son, Jeff (Nikki) Evans and granddaughter, Amanda Evans of Macon, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 22, 2020, at Myers Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
