William was a farmer, grazier and miller. He and Nancy first lived on the Hickman farm on Clear Fork when their house burned down about 1854. They moved to Wolf Creek where the cemetery is today. In 1861, he served the community as Commissioner of Welfare for Bland County and was a member of the Masons.
During the war, he served in Co. F, 8th Regiment, Cavalry Brigade, Bland Co., VA, under the command of Capt. William Neel Harmon. They were known as the "Bland Rangers." He was a member of the provost guard in Bland County the last year of the war.
