When a young boy during the Civil War, Francis Marion Compton was persuaded to cross Wolf Creek in front of his home to steal a sword from a Union officer who had camped there with his battalion. When the soldiers came to the house to search for the sword, they sent in a local man who had joined the Union Army. He found hams and other items hidden in the attic, but didn't report it. A horse's footprint is on the foyer floor, now covered by a modern wood floor. The sword is in a safe deposit box and owned by a descendant. (Information from a descendant.)
