Gary Wendell Jefcoats, 34, a physician, of 4605 Sherbrook Drive, died Saturday of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Soso on Feedmill Road. Services are 1 p.m. today at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia. Dr. Jefcoats, a Jones County Junior College graduate, was a third-year resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In a few months, he would have finished his residency and started work at a general practice in Laurel, said his friend, Buddy Wiggins of Mt. Olive. "All his life, he had said he wanted to be a doctor," said Dr. Jefcoats' sister-in-law, Jill Mixon of Slidell, La. "He just wanted to be able to help people." Wiggins said Dr. Jefcoats got a taste of being a doctor before he began his schooling. "He had worked as a young person here in Laurel on the ambulance service," Wiggins said. "He had had a lot of on-the-job training, so to speak." Dr. Jefcoats had a biology degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a biomedical engineering degree from Mississippi State University. He also was a West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine graduate. "It was a hard road and it took him a lot of years, but that was his goal," Mixon said. "I would not doubt that he would have stayed here. This was his home. He knew there was a need at small towns." Dr. Jefcoats was a member of Bayless Chapel United Methodist Church of Columbia. He was a golfer and also liked working on computers. His first love was family, Mixon said. "He was very proud of them," she said. !! Other survivors include: wife, Judy; sons, Gary Wendell Jefcoats II and Grant Wiggins Jefcoats, both of Jackson; parents, Wendell and Rebecca Jefcoats of Soso; brother, Roger Jefcoats of Collins; sisters, Pamela Griffin of Knoxville and Karen Jefcoats of Gulfport; and grandmother, Ina Armstrong of Ellisville.
