Social reformer and philanthropist. Founder of the Children's Aid Society in New York City (1853) and who instituted the use of the "Orphan Trains" to send orphaned, abused, neglected or abandoned NYC children to other regions of the U.S. in order to place them in good homes with foster parents.

Married Letitia Neill August 21, 1854 in Belfast, Ireland.
