Maria Elizabeth Strack was the daughter of Caroline Catharine Funk and Charles A. Strack, who emigrated from Gittelde in Saxony, Germany to Baltimore, Maryland in 1838. Charles founded a successful furniture business at the corner of George and Princess Streets in York, Pennsylvania around 1840.* Census, church, and York directory records list Maria Elizabeth's first name variously as "Eliza," "Lizzie," "Elizabeth," and "Maria," with the latter more common in her later years. "Lizzie Strack" married Henry J. Deitch, a cabinetmaker, on 2 Sept 1860, at the German Reformed Trinity United Church of Christ in York.** The couple lived at 4 W Princess Street, near the C.A. Strack and Son's furniture store and workshops, and had three children, William C. Deitch, George B. Deitch, and Ella Deitch Ropp Allen. Maria Elizabeth Deitch's 29 Jun 1906 Pennsylvania death certificate, completed by her daughter Ella and attached to this page, confirms her birthdate as 29 Jan 1840, her birthplace as Baltimore, and her parents as Charles Strack and Caroline Funk.
