The son of German-born Charles August & Catherine Carolina Wilhelmina (Funk) Strack, in 1860 he was a cabinet maker and furniture dealer living in York Borough, York County, Pennsylvania.

An antebellum member of York's Worth Infantry Militia, he was also a Civil War veteran. He enlisted and mustered into federal service in Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. A, 16th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1861. The "Andrew" in his middle name is also reported as "Augustus."

He married Mary Magdalene Heckert and fathered Caroline Sanderson "Carrie" (b. 06/15/66), Emma Jane (b. 06/03/69 - married a Laucks), Charles Philip (b. 09/20/72), Rebecca Black (b. 06/17/76 - married Paul F. Schminke), Samuel H. (b. 04/14/79), and F. Margaret (b. ?). He was a member of York's Sedgwick Post No. 37, G.A.R.. Cause of death is listed as a "cerebral hemorrhage."
