Zoe was found in front of my home around February or March of 2002, it was a cold night and she was brought in and immediately became mine. She walked right up the front door and meowed and came right in. A trip to the vet for her shots and they estimated her to be around 9 months old so she was probably born the first half of 2001.

A few weeks later, she was at the vet to be fixed and I got a call from my vet that it was two late, she was pregnant with 3-5 kittens. Oh well, they would became mine too.

The morning Zoe had her kittens I could tell something was up, so I rushed off to a meeting and hurried home as fast as I could. Two gray kittens were already born. I always thought that they were Sage (later Lil' Bit) and her brother Hemmie, just a hunch, I never really knew as they looked so much alike. Shortly after I arrived home another little gray kitten was born, followed by a snowball white kitten named Ashton. The other gray kitten was named Bailey. Lil' Bit went to live with my father and his cat Aaron. I kept the rest.

One special memory that I have of her a few weeks after her kittens were born she decided it was time to relocate them from the box we were keeping them in. I had read about this behavior in a cat book, it said they would move them to a new clean and safe place. Well she started moving them one by one and placing them all on my lap. She just sat on the coffee table watching me and taking a little rest. It was the sweetest memory that she picked me to watch over them and I did until the day they all passed away.

On a similar note, she used to have this large cat toy doll that she would carry around occasionally meowing. Always wondered what was on her mind when she was doing this. One memory that I would like to forget it I accidentally started the dryer with her in it! I was always scared a nosy cat would jump into the dryer and I wouldn't see it and sure enough it happened. I started it and began to hear some thumping so I decided to check it and there she was! Once I got her out, she walked around in a dizzy haze but was ok. She never did try to get back in the dryer and I was extra careful about it in the future.

I don't know how she got the tear on her left ear but she was a fighter. She was always an indoor cat and she ruled the roost. I rescue any strays that I see and I never brought them in and left them with her as I was worried about them! I remember keeping a sweet pit bull in my garage for a few days because I thought Zoe might attack it. She did once put her kitten, Little Bit in the vet hospital for about a week after a territorial war. She bit a huge hole in her! She was extremely protective. I eventually had to separate her from other animals. She would only tolerate her kittens Ashton and Baily and once they passed she was better alone. She seemed happier that way and the others definitely were. I would tell people not to pet her because she may nip at them. She definitely preferred men and loved my husband. She was grouchy but she was my grouch!

She had gotten thinner over the years and lost her hearing probably at least 3-4 years before she passed away. We would always startle her if she didn't see us enter the room. I would still talk to her. Hard to break the habit. I think she may have had some sort of dementia as she would seem suspicious of being petted. In the end she was pretty much only eating treats for food.

Zoe wasn't having a good night on Friday, February 28, 2020. When we checked on her the next morning she was really struggling and couldn't stand or walk. We took her to the vet around 11 am where she passed away on leap day. She outlived her kittens by over 5 1/2 years. We knew it was coming, but after 18 years, you start to think she will forever! She was the first cat that I had.
