Madge Neva Cox was born December 7, 1914 in Peace Valley, Missouri: one of 13 children born to the farm family of A.D. Bennett and Cora (Wilson) Bennett. As a child she walked 2 1/2 miles to school each day. She graduated as Valedictorian of her senior class in 1933. She recalled her parents selling eggs for five cents a dozen, six loaves of unsliced bread for 25 cents and coffee in a glass jar for 25 cents that her mother ground with a small grinder. They would churn butter and put it in molds that made the imprint of a bundle of wheat. Gasoline was five cents a gallon and for those that smoked, three packs of cigaretts were 25 cents.
Madge married Edward Herdon on August 17, 1940 in West Plains, Missouri. They shared 61 years of marriage and were blessed with two children, a son and a daughter. The Herndon family sold their Missouri farm and moved to Oklahoma in 1952 . Madge was a faithful member of the Baptist Church for 89 years. She served as a song director, sunday school teacher, bible school teacher and was the church treasurer for 21 years. She loved gardening, growing flowers and playing dominoes at the Senior Center.
Madge said she owed her longevity to being raised in a Christian home by loving parents. They did lots of hard work, raised their own food and ate well. She was a great believer in drinking water and never drank coffee.
Her advice comes from scripture: "Honor thy father and mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." All of the 13 children in her family claimed that promise.
Madge Neva (Cox) Herndon was inducted into the Centenarians of Oklahoma Hall of fame at the age of 100 years. She lived 105 years and two months.
