Obituary published in Los Angeles Daily News on 28 Jan 2007:

NORBERT WEILAND Passed away on the night of January 11, 2007 at 86. He was preceded by his wife Amy in 2005; his son Michael in 1993; sister Dorothy in 2006 (husband Robert Sr. in 1987); and many other relatives. He left behind his son Dave and daughter-in-law Meegan; daughter-in-law, Colleen; grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, and Joseph; and co usin, Harry Jr. and family. In his life were nephews: Robert DeRosa Jr. (wife Betty, Robert III, Christopher, Suzanne), John DeRosa, Jim Koughan (wife Stephanie, Dax, Delaney, Riley); nieces: Linda Folse (husband John, Jason), Elaine Noland (husband David, Amanda, Krista), Nancy and Bill Sandidge; and in-laws: Ruth and Chuck Dorman and family, and Barbara Torrens family. He was kindly known as "Uncle Norbie". Norbert was born in Chicago in 1920. Things around him sparked an interest to a curious young boy and he had to discover how things were made and tick. He was always active: learning, reading, errands, taking care and looking out for his family. He attended Saint Constance School, Lane Tech High, Army Technical, Aviation Training, a contractor's license, and many skills. Norbert first drove to California from Chicago in 1940 and stayed at his Uncle Bill's chicken ranch in original old Granada Hills. Norb mentioned that on his release from the Army, he walked from the San Fernando bus station into Granada Hills on foot. Norb built his first custom house and also built an apartment building in 1947 on Balboa Blvd., so that his family members had some place to live while coming out to California from Chicago. Norbert built various custom houses on a 2-1/2 acre and other lots. He built the "Weiland Ranch" house facility in 1946 for his parents on Woodley Ave. (now 118 fwy). He built a house for his sister and a house for his new wife Amy in 1948. Norbert also built for his in-laws in 1955 and 1961. Years later he built a larger home for his sister's growing family in 58, and Amy designed a larger home for his own growing family in 60 (where he recently lived independently till 2007 at age 86). Other houses were built and sold as well as working on various commercial buildings, shopping centers, for other local contractors and carpentry projects. He also commuted to work building planes at Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica. He later worked as a Master Carpenter with the Unified School District and then retired from the City of Glendale, California. Norb met his wife Amy at "The Old Swimming Hole" Rinaldi at Hayvenhurst in 1947 (once located on his in-laws ranch, now the JCC). After dating for less than a year-- they were married at the refurbished San Fernando Mission church in 1948. They had two children: Michael (1949-1993) and David (1960). Norb took enjoyment and pleasure being around his loving family, friends, and the company of his neighbors as well as being creative and skilled with man y trades (do it himself). He taught by example, pride, integrity, and personal responsibility-- a mentor and hero. Amy and Norb traveled to Europe, much of the United States, often visited Las Vegas (he liked to watch construction changes). Norbert was an original charter member of Saint John Baptist De La Salle in Granada Hills and member of the "Friendship Club". He was in the Carpenter's Union, WWII Glider Pilots association, and one time member of Aristocrat Caravaners and Lucky 7 trailer camping clubs. Norbert was a flight officer in the Army Air Force and flew various planes, including gliders into Germany during WWII 1943-1945. In his many stories, he remembered flying solo over areas in France. He was also a Sergeant First Class in the Army reserves 1950 through 1952. He loved to eat at many local restaurants becoming friendly with many of the wait staff (we thank you for kindness and patience over the years). He built model airplanes and large doll houses (one was a bank display), and enjoy ed the garden. For exercise he walked the neighborhoods for many years-- keeping an update on home remodeling projects. He read two newspapers every day, and got the maximum amount of magazines at the library per month. He was always full of stories and the latest news in political changes. His son Dave was with him frequently during the last few months-- and daily during his last few weeks... and at his side during the last couple hours... Norb was also joined by his grandchildren Jennifer and Joseph. Times like these we really learn to respect the Emergency Room Staff, Doctors, Nurses, Fire Fighters, Ambulance Drivers, many levels of Technicians, and especially Clergy. Norb and Amy's urns will be joined together at his son Dave's home. A memorial will be planned on a later month. Donations should be directed to the American Cancer Society. His special "laugh" will be remembered as an echo to love life. God bless your work here. Be at peace. Thank you. Love you! You will be missed.
