Paul studied engineering and architecture at the University of Alabama, Georgia Tech, and the American School of Fine Arts, Fontainebleau, France. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant with the USNR Naval Air Intelligence, assigned to the Army-Nany-British Joint Target Group, and later to the U. S. Strategic Bombing Survey in Japan. He practiced architecture in Huntsville from 1938-46, and in Birmingham beginning in 1947. In 1982, he retired as vice president of Davis, Speake & Associate, who were the architects for most of the buildings at Samford University and many other school, college, church and hospital buildings. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and former president of its Alabama chapter; past member, Construction Specifications Institute, Alabama Board for Registration of Architects, and Mountain Brook City Planning Commission. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, which he served at various times as Traveling Secretary, Province Commander, Councilor, Senior Councilor (national vice president) and Scholarship Fund trustees. He was also a member of the Country Club of Birmingham, Birmingham Exchange Club, Mensa, ODK, Tau Beta Pi, and Phi Beta Kappa.

Services were held at Independent Presbyterian church, Birmingham, where he was a member and elder. Survivors included his wife and three nephews.
