James Wright Walker, 87, passed away February 8, 2020 at his home in Lindon, Utah, with his family nearby.
Jim was born on October 7, 1932 to Calvin A Walker and Mary Lucille Wright. He grew up under the shadow of Mount Timpanogos in Pleasant Grove, Utah, where he would return to and live for most of his life.
As a boy, Jim learned from his father to love scouting and the outdoors as he went hiking, camping, and backpacking and became an Eagle Scout. For many years, he dedicated his time to sharing that passion with others as a scout leader. He received the Life-Time Scouter Award and a Silver Beaver for his 73 years of service in scouting and helped and encouraged his sons, grandsons, and many others to become Eagle Scouts.
While on leave during his service in the Army during the Korean Conflict, Jim met Marlene Call. On their second date, he told her that he was going to marry her. After his military service, he served a mission and then was sealed to Marlene for time and eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on December 14, 1955.
Jim built a career at Brigham Young University, combining his love and knowledge of airplanes and photography to innovate new photographic processes. His children and grandchildren remember him often at his workbench, building model airplanes. He would use those model airplanes in order to take aerial photographs that were used for history, archeology, agriculture, and more. He taught his methods to others, traveled to many countries, and after his retirement, he used his skills as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with his wife, Marlene.
Jim had a solid foundation based in the Gospel. He knew that the brightest light in his life was Jesus Christ.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marlene: he called her the greatest miracle of his life. They spent 64 years together and had six children: Jilleen (Rudy) Neyenhuis, Raymond (Claire) Walker, Sharon (John) Pontius, Brenda (Erin) Anderson, Melody (Steve) Liddle and Christopher (Stephanie) Walker- 27 grandchildren, 60+ great-grandchildren, and he loved them all dearly. Jim never forgot how to play, and having young children around always brightened his face into a smile.
He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Jean Caldwell, Jerald Walker, Nancy Spurlock, Kent Walker, and Glen Walker. Jim was preceded in death by his siblings Dee Walker and Della Davis.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 11:00 am in the Battlcreek First Ward Chapel, 1250 East 200 South, Pleasant Grove. Family and friends may attend a viewing Monday evening from 6-8 pm at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and also at the church on Tuesday from 9:30-10:45 am prior to funeral services.
