Printed in the Houston Times Post dated September 23 1948. Mrs. Gregory, Pioneer, Dies. Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Gregory, 91, believed to be one of the oldest native-born residents of Chickasaw County, whose mother was born at the Hermitage in Nashville, Tenn., and whose grandfather, Captain John Holliday, was among the first white settlers of this county, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. A Harris, at Houlka, Tuesday, Sept. 14. She was the widow of the late John Moses Gregory. The deceased's grandfather accompanied Andrew Jackson's army on a swing southward over the old Natchez Trace in defense of New Orleans. Captain Holliday later opened an Indian Trading Post one mile east of Old Houlka. She was the daughter of Wm. Philco and Sarah Holliday Baskin. And was born in Houston March 23 1857. She was married January 29 1879, moving from Wesley community to Foster Town, uniting with Wesley Chapel Methodist church in 1885, where she retained her membership until death. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory moved to Houlka in 1919 where he died in 1923. She leaves a sister, a niece, nephews and numerous relatives and friends. Last rites were conducted Wednesday at 3 pm at the Houlka Methodist Church by the Rev. Mr. Selmon and concluded at Wesley Cemetery.
