Henry and Carrie moved to Minnesota and settled in Farmington, Minnesota. Henry raised his family on a farm (probably in Iowa). He spent his later years as a handyman and caretaker for the fairgrounds in Farmington, Minnesota. He is remembered by Loren Pettis as being rather grumpy and not very friendly to children. He smoked a pipe and chewed tobacco and was known to drink more than he should. In his later years he was stooped over (probably from arthritis). He had thick black hair and usually wore a cap. Loren and Nancy Pettis once locked him in his garage as a joke, but he became so angry that they were afraid to open the door. They ran and hid until grandma (Carrie [Nau] Pettis) opened the door. In his younger days he was a bit of a "rounder" and was known to be both physically and verbally abusive. He is not remembered by his grandchildren as being the ideal grandfather. As told by Harvey Pettis: Henry once got into a fist fight with a neighbor because the neighbor boys were bullying the Pettis boys. Henry received a broken rib, but he won the fight. On Halloween, to get even with the neighbors, Harvey and others went into the neighbor's barn and removed the boards which separated the grains and seeds. This allowed the seeds to mix together and undoubtedly caused considerable grief for the neighbor.
