Major League Baseball Player. Born Ramon Antonio Aviles Miranda, he attended Fernando Callejo High School in Puerto Rico, prior to being signed as an amateur free agent by the Boston Red Sox in 1969. He made his Major League debut with the Red Sox on July 10, 1977. After he was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies, he served as a utility infielder (second base and shortstop) as he backed up Manny Trillo and Larry Bowa. Aviles experienced a world championship with the 1980 Philadelphia Phillies and produced a career high 28 hits that season (1980). He saw additional post season play the following season (1981) when the Phillies reached the Divisional Series. After retiring as a player, he went on to serve as a longtime Minor League manager. He died from complications of diabetes and high blood pressure.
