Daisy Stewart
May 17, 1927 ~ January 27, 2020 (age 92)
Ninety-two years ago on the dusty windy plains of eastern Colorado a little flower was born to Joe and Bessie (Hamm) Knight. She was welcomed by older brother Kenneth, and later their family grew to include sister Eula Lee, brothers Joe W. and Everett. Daisy was a bit of a "wild flower" as a child riding a horse bare back to school. Out cart wheeling any classmate by a country mile and teaming up with sister in relays at track and field days to win blue ribbons.
She graduated from Kit Carson High School on May 17, 1945. . . her 18th birthday. Daisy moved to Denver and took classes from Barnes Business College. She married and became the mother of three children, Leona, Bill (William) and Jack. In 1958 Daisy was left to raise three children alone. She and younger brother Joe W. combined their families for several years. Many times, they laughed at. . . "Uncle Joe is my dad and sister is my cousin." Daisy walked 6 days a week to Les' Bakery where her cake decorating talents were highly sought.
These were hard times for Daisy but her roots grew deep and she preserved. She encouraged her kids in Scouts, sports, and academics. The friends of her children loved her greatly and gave this 90-pound feisty woman the name "Big Red". She opened her heart to a high school kid who desperately needed a home and he moved in.
The best years were yet to come. Daisy married Delp (Hubert Stewart) on Valentine's Day 1969. Together they bought their Lincoln Street home. Together they enjoyed traveling, dancing Friday nights at the Elks, taking drives to visit family and friends while listening to Willie Nelson.
For 23 years, this beautiful flower worked at Ball Aerospace. In fact, when astronaut Sally Ride visited the plant, she asked if she could meet Daisy who was in full bloom. Her stories, antics, and good team times brought her many lifelong friends.
The only thing that equaled her love for her three children was the love she had becoming a grandmother to Schellie, Wes, Natalie, Matt, Laura and Emily. They blessed her even more when James, Malorie, Hannah, Hailey, Caden, Easton, Holton, Cooper and Jayde gave her the name GG for Great Grandma.
After 23 years of marriage, an illness took Delp to paradise. She remained in their home helping elderly neighbors travel to NC and gossiping about the "Young and the Restless". As years passed, Daisy needed help tending her home and garden on Lincoln Street. Donna (10 years) and Jenny (8 years) lived with and lovingly cared for her when fatigue and memory failed. Daisy joined Delp on January 27 and now this Beautiful Flower is in God's Flower Garden.
