Musician. He was a Brazilian composer, conductor, pianist, and music critic. Born to French and Swiss immigrants, his combination of classical music with Brazil's popular folk music & rhythms made him a pioneer of barrier-breaking the European musician domination. At a young age, he became quite inclined towards music, most likely from being in his father's music shop. At age eight, he made his first public performance alongside his father and older brother Luis, & by the time he turned nine, several critics compared him as the next Mozart. In his teenage years, he studied under French pianist Gabriel Giraudon. When Levy was 16, he began publishing his own compositions across Europe. In 1883, at only 19 years old, he was elected as the Director of Concerts at São Paulo's Haydn House. Four years later, at age 23, he traveled to Europe to study alongside Italian composer Vincenzo Ferroni & French composer Émile Durand. It is believed that as a result of his sudden passing while at his family's countryside estate, he became the inaugural member of the infamous 27 Club, despite the club not being named until a little over a century after his death. In 1920, nearly three decades after his death, French composer Darius Milhaud used Levy's "Tango Brasileño" ("Brazilian Tango") piece as part of his ballet, "Le Bœuf sur le toit" ("The Ox on The Roof"). To this day, the City of São Paulo grants a prestigious music award in his name.
